UCLA's Top Five Hangouts

Where do all the UCLA students go to grab a bite after watching the Bruins win (yet) another basketball game at Pauley Pavilion? The answer is: Westwood! One of the greatest things about UCLA, besides its winning sports teams and stellar academic reputation, is the campus’ proximity to Westwood. Westwood is a great Los Angeles neighborhood that features many tasty treats and cool hangout spots. With so many great establishments to choose from it was hard to narrow it down to only five, but here we go:

5. Enzo’s Pizzeria (10940 Weyburn Avenue, Westwood, CA 90024; (310) 208-3696)

Enzo’s offers tasty pizza at affordable prices. You can’t go wrong with any of their delicious thin-crust New York style pizzas. On a budget? No problem here! Enzo’s offers a monster 23” pizza for just over $15. Enzo’s is open late and students often grab a late bite after hitting the bars.

4. Jerry’s Famous Deli (10925 Weyburn Avenue, Westwood, CA 90024, (310) 208-2254)

The first thing you notice when you enter into Jerry’s is the HUGE menu! This place has everything from sandwiches to Jewish deli favorites like matzo-ball soup. You will not leave hungry when you eat at Jerry’s, the portions are very generous. But be sure to leave room for dessert, they have amazing milkshakes, cakes and old-world style pastries that give your grandmother a run for her money.

3. Gypsy Café (940 Broxton Avenue, Westwood, CA 90024, (310) 824-2119)

Gypsy Café is a great place to people watch in Westwood. Gypsy Cafe offers over 25 flavors of hookah (flavored tobacco that you smoke out of a water pipe) as well as outdoor seating. You might have to wait for a bit on a Friday or Saturday night, but it is definitely worth it. In addition to hookah, Gypsy serves an array of amazing Middle Eastern food. Favorites include their hummus and pita, tomato soup and Moroccan mint tea (made with fresh mint leaves!). Take a load off, relax and try to see how many famous faces you can spot!

2. Damon & Pythias (1061 Broxton Avenue, Westwood, CA 90024, (310) 824-8777)

Damon & Pythias is a relative newcomer to the Westwood scene, but UCLA students love their fast, fresh and flavorful meals. Damon & Pythias’s Mediterranean-inspired food satisfies both carnivores and vegetarians alike. Favorite items include things like the turkey cobb salad, steak sandwiches and their famous garlic fries. Don’t forget the breath mints!

1. Diddy Reese (926 Broxton Avenue, Westwood, CA 90024, (310) 208-0448)

“A $1.25 of pure pleasure” is how most students describe this Westwood institution. Two warm, gooey cookies of your choice filled with rich decadent ice cream; what could be better? Get here early because Diddy Reese always has long lines, but you will never be disappointed! This is why USC students brave the cross-town trip to Westwood, but who can blame them?
